MALCOLM HARRIS'S Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World came out this February, for the most part to deservedly warm notices. Harris served prominently in the Occupy Wall Street movement, wrote Kids These Days: Human Capital and The Making of Millennials (2017), and maintains an enjoyably caustic presence on social media and in interviews. As such, he has acquired a reputation as a spokesperson for his (and my) pissed-off, left-behind, left-wing generation, chewed up by the 2007–08 financial crisis and spat out to despair of the world as it is, while alternating between hope and grief over the possibility of a better one.
